Bamberg
Travel Advice for Seniors: Bamberg
Our next stop on our ten-day small group tour through Germany was Bamberg, However, on the way we stopped a Weimar for a bit of culture.
Weimar is known for the development of Weimar Classicism, a cultural movement. Both Goethe and Schiller lived in the city and were part of the movement. Goethe’s baroque residence is now a museum, and the Schiller Museum is adjacent to the writer’s home.
Weimar is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its cultural history and role in the German Enlightenment. It was indeed a charming town, with a remarkable National Theater or Deutsches National theater.
And on to Bamberg, another UNESCO World Heritage City. Bamberg is a medieval city that is preserved in its old town, which was not bombed during World War II, making it unique in Germany. The town developed in the 9th century, when its name was taken from nearby Babenberch castle. Bamberg’s 2400 original timber houses and medieval streets make it a pleasure to explore.
We made a stop at Bamberg Cathedral which was built in the 13th century and houses the tombs of the imperial couple Kunigunde and Heinrich II.
We also stopped by the lovely Baroque Neue Residenz with its imperial apartments and artwork. Over forty rooms were on display in the 17th century palace featuring furniture, ornate ceilings, tapestries and artwork from a period spanning over four centuries. Don’t miss the Imperial Hall and the State Gallery with its works from the Bavarian State Paintings Collection.
The Fisherman’s Village of Little Venice is also worth a look just to be charmed by the picturesque view. The former fisherman’s district is situated along the Regnitz River and is said to look similar to Venice, hence the name. However, the timber buildings do make it look very much like historic Bamberg.
Also, do take time to stroll through the old town and appreciate the architecture and history there. As a side note, Bamberg is also known for its breweries and its distinctive local beer with a smoky taste, if you’re of a mind to stop on the square for a little people-watching.
Where we stayed: Hotel Europa. Breakfast included, nice hotel, centrally located.
How we got there: About a three-hour bus ride from Dresden to Bamberg excluding a stop at Weimar. This was part of a ten-day small group tour through Germany with a side trip to Czech Republic.
