Tips for traveling to Japan

When to go: March-May for spring and cherry blossoms and September-November for fall foliage

Immigration and Visas: Visas are not required for US tourists staying up to 90 days. Always verify the latest requirements three months before leaving to make sure nothing has changed.

Accessibility Information: Japan has become much more accessible. Major attractions have added accessibility features and most new buildings and hotels are accessible. Language: Japanese

Etiquette: Proper manners and consideration of others is highly important in Japanese culture. Wear modest clothing, keep your voice low, be polite, take off your shoes as appropriate, use your chopsticks correctly, don’t eat and walk, stay quiet while using public transportation, learn to bow at least respectfully, don’t be late. Onsens require you to be naked, also some will not let you in if you have tattoos. Don’t blow your nose in public, wear a mask if you are ill, don’t interrupt, accept a business card if offered with two hands and interest.
