Khao Lak

Travel Advice for Seniors: Khao Lak

Instead of going to Phuket, which is a very popular beach area with the emphasis on night life, we instead decided to go to Khoa Lak for a quiet and secluded stay on the beach.

It is about an hour north of Phuket and has the same beautiful beaches and crystal-clear water.

On the way to the resort, we asked the driver to stop by a convenience store to stock up on some snacks as we knew we would be paying for everything at the Resort.

We stayed at the Devasom Khao Lak Resort. Breakfast was included, but other meals and drinks were not. The accommodation was very nice, and the meals were all very good, including a “French” high tea, which was a bit odd, but still delicious. We also had a massage here, which was exceptional. The room also had a nice view.

The beach was not as wonderful as we were hoping it would be as the Devasom sits on a corner of beach that curves into a cove. The sand in several areas was leeching away and huge bags of sand had been put in place to help with the conservation effort. This made the beach a bit awkward to get to and also, there were no umbrellas.

We did enjoy a wonderful massage at the on-grounds spa.

We spent three days relaxing and then headed to Phuket for our flight home to the States.

Where we stayed: Devasom Khao Lak. Breakfast included, other meals were not. Restaurants on site. Very nice hotel.

How we got there: Flew to Phuket from Chaing Mai, then private transfer to hotel. This was part of a four-week private tour through Southeast Asia, touring Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand.

General Accessibility Information: Thailand is generally not considered very handicapped accessible, with limited wheelchair accessibility in most places. Some tour operators offer accessible tours, and some high-end hotels are accessible. Some attractions in larger cities have wheelchair access.Call in advance to verify and make specialty arrangements. However, see our sections on specialty apps and accessible travel for more on accessibility assistance.
