Okavango Delta

Travel Advice for Seniors: Okavango Delta

The third leg on our safari to Botswana was a visit to the exquisite Okavango Delta. The flight by bush plane was an excellent first look at the delta, beautiful shades of blues and greens from the sky with the waterways lacing through the land. We intentionally chose to go to three very different types of terrain in Botswana to see the variety of animals at each, Chobe River was first, Savute the marshland second and finally the river delta of Okavango.

Camp Xakanaxa.was our accommodation for the next few days is located on the banks of the Khwai River on the Xakanaxa Lagoon, in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve. We had our own private “glamping” canvas tent with two comfortable beds, full bath and all amenities. The main lodge area where we had evening drinks, meals and WIFI was just a short walk away. The food was buffet and all very good.

The game drives were also very good and the guides themselves very personable. We saw the Big 5 here, excepting the rhino, which had been heavily poached prior to the time of our visit. There were efforts underway to reintroduce rhinos but the location was being kept secret for the time being until they could be established.

The Okavango Delta is well known for the over 450 species of bird life. We had a very enjoyable and not too strenuous water safari by canoe which was a nice departure from the Land Rover guided game drive. It was also interesting to see the various types of water plants including the papyrus.

The Delta was a great addition to a safari showing off the best of Botswana. The safari here to Botswana was so special and memorable to us that we immediately started our plans for a return safari visit to Africa.
