When to go: April – May for Spring or September – October for Fall

Immigration and Visas: You will need a visa to visit China. Apply for a visa through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center well in advance. Always verify the latest requirements three months before leaving to make sure nothing has changed.

Accessibility Information: Most large cities are somewhat accessible, particularly hotels, some transportation and some major sights. Outside of the major cities, accessibility is generally less frequent to find. Also, be prepared for curious onlookers. Language: Mandarin Chinese

Etiquette: Be polite and keep your voice down; be respectful of elders and authority figures, avoid touching people and avoid smiling at strangers. Modest clothing, no public displays of affection, address people formally, don’t be late, avoid pointing at people or whistling and use chopsticks correctly.  Of note is that Westerners are considered wealthy and are expected to purchase a great deal of food at restaurants even if they don’t eat it. Also, avoid any political discussions.

Embassy: Beijing with consulates in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Wuhan

Emergencies: 119 and 120 for medical emergencies

Currency: Chinese Renminbi or Yuan

Transportation: Comprehensive transportation system that includes flights, trains, highways, waterways, and local city transportation.

Tipping Info: Outside of major tourist areas, tipping can be considered rude.
