When to go: March – May or September – October is a good time to visit as the weather is warm and it is less crowded. June – August will have warm weather but may be more crowded and expensive. 

Immigration and Visas: No visa is required for US citizens, however, an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) authorization may be required in 2026. Always verify the latest requirements three months before leaving to make sure nothing has changed.

Accessibility Information: Hungary’s larger cities are generally accessible with accessible major hotels and sights. Call in advance to verify and make specialty arrangements. See our sections on specialty apps and accessible travel for more on accessibility assistance.

Language: Hungarian

Etiquette: Greet people using formal titles and shake hands when meeting. Being on time is important. Dress modestly and don’t call attention to oneself. Public affection and casual touching are not common. Avoid making excessive noise in public. Ask for permission prior to taking someone’s picture.

Transportation: Trains and buses are popular. Taxis and Metros in large cities, some have subways.

Tipping Info: Tipping is customary, about 10-15% for good service. Sometimes a service charge of 12.5% is already added to the bill so check before adding more.
